The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has recognized Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the immediate past Governor of Abia State, as an Ambassador of the institution in appreciation of his contributions to society and his distinguished representation of the university.
Dr. Ikpeazu, a holder of a Doctorate in Biochemical Pharmacology from UNICAL, was acknowledged for embodying the university’s values of excellence and integrity. His nomination comes as part of the institution’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, set to take place in March 2025.
A delegation led by UNICAL’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, officially presented the nomination letter to Dr. Ikpeazu in Abuja. The delegation also included Professor Eyong Ubana Eyong, Chairman of the UNICAL @ 50 Planning Committee, alongside other senior university officials.
Speaking on behalf of the University Council and Senate, Professor Obi stated that the decision to honor Dr. Ikpeazu was made by the Central Planning Committee and the UNICAL Alumni Association. She emphasized that the former governor’s professional achievements and his commitment to upholding the university’s reputation made him a deserving recipient of the prestigious title.
She further highlighted how Dr. Ikpeazu has successfully applied the knowledge gained from UNICAL to his career, particularly in governance and innovative problem-solving.
In response, Dr. Ikpeazu expressed gratitude for the honor, describing it as a significant recognition of his academic and professional journey. He credited his education at UNICAL for shaping his leadership philosophy and influencing key initiatives during his tenure as governor. He particularly noted that his knowledge of scientific principles helped him introduce the cement rigid pavement technology in road construction—an initiative aimed at improving road durability.
Dr. Ikpeazu pledged to continue supporting the university’s growth and upholding the values that have distinguished UNICAL over the past 50 years.
The award presentation was attended by notable personalities, including Chief Okey Ahiwe, the 2023 Abia PDP governorship candidate; Rt. Hon.
