Senate Suspension Controversy: Calls for Fairness and Investigation Grow

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked widespread backlash, with political groups and prominent figures condemning the Senate’s decision.

The Labour Party (LP) criticized the six-month suspension as unjust and unlawful, arguing that it denied the people of Kogi Central their right to representation. LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, insisted that the Senate disregarded a court ruling prohibiting such action and failed to grant Akpoti-Uduaghan a fair hearing.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, also condemned the Senate’s move, calling it a “vicious abuse of power.” She accused the Senate of choosing to punish Akpoti-Uduaghan instead of properly investigating her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Ezekwesili praised Akpoti-Uduaghan for inspiring a new generation and vowed that she would not stand alone in her fight for justice.

Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Network (IYN) has rejected calls for Akpabio’s impeachment, describing such efforts as destabilizing and politically motivated. The group reaffirmed confidence in Akpabio’s leadership while calling for transparency in addressing the controversy.

Despite the backlash, Akpabio has suggested a potential window for reconciliation, leaving room for further developments in the unfolding political dispute.
