Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has emphasized the vital role Northern Nigeria plays in securing a prosperous future for the entire country. Speaking at a high-level engagement with Northern leaders under the National Political Consultative Group on Sunday, Obi presented a clear vision for national progress rooted in the transformation of the North.Northern Nigeria Holds the Key
Obi declared that Nigeria’s long-standing challenges — from insecurity to economic stagnation — cannot be fully addressed without unlocking the potential of Northern Nigeria. He called the region a “great asset” that remains underutilized due to poor governance, policy failure, and systemic neglect.
“The solution to Nigeria’s problems lies in the North,” Obi stated.
During the meeting, Obi addressed several Northern power brokers, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other political stakeholders. The Labour Party leader didn’t shy away from confronting the harsh realities: poverty, he said, is the primary driver of insecurity and crime in the North.
He explained that without addressing poverty head-on, efforts to stabilize the region would remain ineffective.
Obi identified education as the most powerful tool to combat the poverty crisis. He urged Northern elites to invest massively in education, pointing to global examples like Bangladesh and the Netherlands — agrarian nations that turned their fortunes around through policy and education.
One of Obi’s most striking messages was his appeal to Northern voters to reject religious and ethnic biases during elections. He urged citizens to vote based on competence, character, and vision — not tribe or faith.
According to Ibrahim Umar, spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi’s comments were meant to ignite a new political consciousness that sees Nigeria as one united entity, rather than a patchwork of tribal interests
Obi’s message comes at a crucial time, as Nigeria grapples with rising inflation, food insecurity, and ongoing violence in parts of the North. By highlighting the untapped agricultural potential and youthful population of the region, he’s advocating for a shift from politics-as-usual to purposeful leadership.
Whether his appeal resonates in future elections remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Peter Obi continues to shape the national conversation in bold and forward-thinking ways.
