Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has issued a compelling call to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to revive abandoned infrastructure and social development projects across the state that have been neglected for years.
The governor made this appeal during a meeting with the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Calabar.
Governor Otu listed several long-abandoned and critical projects, including:
- The Youth Centre in Akpabuyo
- The Adiabo–Ikoneto Road
- The Ikom Medical Centre
He emphasized the urgency of reactivating these initiatives, which are vital to the state’s health, economic, and youth development agendas.
In addition to infrastructure, the governor called for NDDC’s humanitarian intervention, revealing that Cross River is currently hosting over 54,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“The presence of such a large number of IDPs puts enormous pressure on our state resources. We need collaborative support,” he said.
Governor Otu also clarified reports of tension between the state and the NDDC, including an incident two weeks ago where state officials allegedly blocked NDDC’s project commissioning.
He attributed the situation to a simple breakdown in communication, adding:
“We don’t have any issues with the NDDC. Our approach is lawful, organized, and people-centered. We’re ready to move forward in partnership.”
Governor Otu urged the NDDC to include Cross River-specific needs in its work plan, stressing that more technical engagement and state inclusion in project planning would ensure better outcomes for local communities.
In his remarks, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC boss, praised the cooperative posture of Cross River State and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to restarting stalled and abandoned projects.
He also mentioned ongoing partnerships with NNPC, NLNG, and other private-sector institutions to deliver impactful infrastructure, including a world-class hospital project underway in Ikom.
This renewed dialogue between the Cross River State Government and NDDC signals a positive step toward responsible governance and inclusive development in the Niger Delta.
If implemented effectively, the revival of abandoned projects could restore public trust and significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of Cross River residents.
