The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act in the forthcoming Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as in selected state bye-elections across the country.
According to the commission, the exercise will serve as a test run for the new electoral framework ahead of larger national elections. INEC officials explained that using the FCT council polls and state bye-elections provides an opportunity to assess how effectively the updated law works in real election conditions, while identifying areas that may require further adjustment.
The planned deployment is expected to focus on key innovations introduced by the 2026 Electoral Act, including electoral transparency measures, improved result management processes, and enhanced use of technology in voter accreditation and collation. INEC says these reforms are designed to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and reduce disputes arising from elections.
The FCT Area Council elections, being grassroots-level contests, are seen as a suitable platform to evaluate the practical implications of the new law without the pressure associated with nationwide polls. Similarly, state bye-elections will allow the commission to test the system in different political and geographic contexts.
Election observers and civil society groups have welcomed the move, noting that early testing of new electoral laws could help prevent operational challenges during major elections. They have, however, urged INEC to ensure adequate voter education so that citizens understand any new procedures introduced under the Act.
As preparations continue, INEC has reassured stakeholders of its commitment to credible, transparent, and inclusive elections. The outcome of the FCT council polls and state bye-elections is expected to play a crucial role in shaping how the 2026 Electoral Act is fully implemented nationwide.
