The Nigeria Police Force has announced a restriction of movement across parts of Kano State ahead of the State House of Assembly by-elections scheduled to hold on Saturday.
According to the police, the restriction is part of security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process. The directive is expected to limit vehicular and human movement during specific hours on election day, particularly within the affected constituencies where the by-elections will take place.
Police authorities explained that the decision was taken to prevent electoral violence, curb vote buying, and allow security personnel and electoral officials to carry out their duties without interference. They noted that only individuals on essential duties, such as election officials, accredited observers, emergency workers, and security agencies, would be exempted from the restriction.
Residents of the affected areas have been advised to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security operatives deployed for the exercise. The police also warned that anyone found violating the movement restriction or attempting to disrupt the election would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process. Voters were encouraged to come out peacefully to exercise their civic rights, while political parties and supporters were urged to conduct themselves responsibly.
The by-elections are being closely watched as part of efforts to strengthen democratic representation at the state legislative level.
