In a move aimed at encouraging academic excellence and strengthening human capital development, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced automatic scholarships for first-class graduates of Abia State University (ABSU) to pursue postgraduate studies.
According to the governor, all students who graduate with First Class honours from the university will be granted full scholarships to undertake their Master’s and PhD programmes in any Nigerian university of their choice.
Governor Otti made the announcement as part of his administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence and investing in the future of young scholars in the state. He noted that rewarding outstanding academic performance would motivate students to strive for excellence while also helping to produce highly skilled professionals who can contribute meaningfully to national development.
The initiative is expected to provide opportunities for brilliant students who may face financial challenges in continuing their education beyond the undergraduate level.
Education stakeholders and students have welcomed the development, describing it as a bold step toward encouraging intellectual growth and strengthening Nigeria’s academic sector.
Observers say the scholarship programme could also inspire other states to introduce similar incentives aimed at supporting outstanding students and promoting higher education.
The announcement has since generated positive reactions among students and members of the academic community, many of whom believe the initiative will help nurture the next generation of scholars and researchers.
