The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s defeat in the upcoming 2027 presidential election is “inevitable,” citing the administration’s alleged failures and a perceived drift toward authoritarianism.
This assertion was made during the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, in Abuja. The party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to establish a one-party state, driven by what it described as a “mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027.” The PDP contends that the APC’s actions, including alleged suppression of opposition parties and institutions, are indicative of this fear.
Acting PDP National Chairman Iliya Damagum expressed “serious concern” over the current state of the nation, attributing it to what he termed the “irredeemably exploitative, insensitive, and anti-people APC administration.” He urged the Tinubu-led government to reverse its “anti-people policies” and take concrete steps to address the country’s economic challenges and security issues.
The PDP’s NEC meeting, originally scheduled at the party’s national secretariat, was relocated to Legacy House due to the closure of the secretariat by the Federal Capital Territory Administration over unpaid rent. This meeting comes amid internal challenges within the PDP, including defections and leadership disputes, which have raised concerns about the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
Despite these internal issues, the PDP remains resolute in its stance against the APC, positioning itself as the primary opposition force committed to restoring democratic norms and addressing the nation’s pressing concerns.
