Governor Alex Otti Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Power Supply in Abia State

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring a stable power supply as a catalyst for industrial growth in the state.

During a visit to the Aba Integrated Power Project (Geometric) headquarters in Osisioma, alongside a delegation from the European Union (EU), Governor Otti assessed the progress of power generation and distribution efforts. He commended the management of Aba IPP for their strides in expanding electricity access despite existing challenges.

Highlighting his commitment to industrialization, the governor disclosed strategic plans for the state to invest in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to enhance power access in areas beyond the Aba Ring-Fenced Zone. He assured continued governmental support for Aba Power, noting ongoing discussions with Professor Barth Nnaji regarding the sale of excess power to Umuahia once the state finalizes the acquisition of the Umuahia portion of EEDC.

Governor Otti emphasized that reliable electricity is pivotal in reviving dormant industries across the state. He mentioned the efforts to recover major industries, including the once-thriving Star Paper Mill in Aba, and expressed optimism about positive outcomes following discussions with the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

The EU delegation, led by Mr. Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation at the European Union, stated that their visit aimed to evaluate power infrastructure and explore potential partnerships.

Barr. Ugo Opiegbe, Managing Director of Aba Integrated Power Project, provided insights into the company’s operations, explaining that their gas-fired embedded power plant currently generates 141 megawatts. He acknowledged Governor Otti’s instrumental role in resolving the company’s gas supply challenges through high-level meetings with the Vice President and the NNPC Group Managing Director.

The EU delegation’s visit continues with an inspection of a cocoa plantation in Bende Local Government Area, accompanied by Governor Otti.
