Utomi, Ezekwesili Warn INEC, APC Against Stifling Opposition in Nigeria

Prominent Nigerian public figures and political commentators, Ayo Utomi and Oby Ezekwesili, have issued a stern warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), cautioning against any attempts to stifle opposition voices ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking during separate interviews and public statements, both Utomi and Ezekwesili stressed that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the ability of opposition parties and independent voices to operate freely without harassment or undue interference. They argued that any effort to limit political competition or manipulate the electoral process could undermine public trust in the country’s democratic institutions.

According to Ezekwesili, an effective democracy thrives on checks and balances, open debate, and robust participation from all political actors. She emphasized that attempts to suppress dissent or marginalize opposition parties not only erode citizens’ confidence in governance but also risk triggering political instability.

Ayo Utomi echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that a healthy democracy requires transparency in electoral processes, including the impartiality of INEC as the body responsible for conducting free and fair elections. He warned that any partisan behavior by the electoral commission or the ruling party could have long-term consequences for Nigeria’s political landscape.

Political analysts have noted that Nigeria’s upcoming elections are critical for the nation’s democratic trajectory, making it essential for all stakeholders to uphold electoral fairness. The warnings from Utomi and Ezekwesili serve as a reminder to political actors that the eyes of both the citizenry and the international community remain on Nigeria as it navigates its electoral processes.

Both public figures concluded by urging citizens to remain vigilant, actively participate in the democratic process, and hold political leaders accountable, reinforcing the principle that democracy is strengthened when opposition voices are protected rather than silenced.
