In a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the consumer protection agency emphasized the need to prevent undue exploitation of customers during the review process.
The commission’s directive comes in response to MultiChoice’s request for additional time to appear before the regulator over growing concerns about its frequent price increases.
Initially, the FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer for an investigative hearing scheduled for February 27, 2025. However, following the company’s request, the hearing was rescheduled to March 6, 2025. The commission has mandated the attendance of the CEO and other key representatives, along with the submission of a detailed explanation regarding the proposed price adjustments.
As part of this directive, MultiChoice is required to maintain the subscription rates as of February 27, 2025, until the commission completes its review and makes a final decision,” the statement read.
The FCCPC clarified that the price freeze is a temporary but necessary step to shield consumers from potential unfair pricing while the investigation remains active.
MultiChoice Nigeria had earlier informed subscribers of a forthcoming price adjustment set to take effect on March 1, 2025. The company attributed the change to increasing operational costs associated with providing premium content.
In a notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” MultiChoice informed customers:
“Dear Customer, please note that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages. This is to enable us to continue offering our customers world-class homegrown and international content, delivered through the best technology.”
While the Premium and Compact Plus packages were to remain at N44,500 and N30,000, respectively, other plans, including the DStv Compact package, were slated for an upward price review.
The FCCPC has assured consumers that further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds. In the meantime, MultiChoice has been directed to comply with the existing price structure until the regulatory body reaches a final decision.
