Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has launched fresh legal actions against what his legal team describes as continuous violations of his constitutional rights.
In a statement released on Thursday, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed that two separate suits had been filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to demand due process in his ongoing case.
The first suit, identified as CV/875/25, seeks to enforce Kanu’s right to a fair trial within a reasonable period. Alternatively, it requests his unconditional release. The second, marked M/3224/2025, is a writ of mandamus compelling authorities to conduct the trial in accordance with the law, including transferring the case to the Southeast, where his legal team argues it should have been heard initially.
Ejimakor cited multiple constitutional breaches in Kanu’s case, particularly since Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako recused herself on September 24, 2024. Key concerns include the failure to reassign the case to a new judge, the controversial decision to return the case to the same judge, and the prolonged delay in commencing trial.
“These actions amount to a serious miscarriage of justice,” Ejimakor stated, stressing that Kanu has been held in detention for nearly four years without due process.
Kanu’s continued incarceration and legal battles have sparked debates on judicial independence, human rights, and the broader political implications of his case in Nigeria.
