In a bold and candid revelation, Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, has disclosed that his next political stop—if he ever leaves the PDP—would be the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a live interview on TVC’s Your View on Tuesday, Sowunmi did not hold back his admiration for the leadership qualities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari. He praised both men for what he described as “political stability and ideological consistency.”
“Let me be very upfront. I’ve always said and I’ve said it many times over, if I ever leave the PDP, damn, I’m going to the APC. And why is that? Because at least I can accept that the two main pillars of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are stable people. They don’t jump from one political tendency to the other, and have been damn stable too since 1998,” he said.
The statement has sparked fresh debate in Nigeria’s political space, especially considering Sowunmi’s long-standing affiliation with the PDP, spanning nearly three decades. As a former governorship candidate in Ogun State and a vocal advocate of democratic values, his potential crossover to the APC would mark a significant political shift.
Sowunmi further expressed deep concerns about the internal dynamics within the PDP. He criticized what he referred to as “deliberate self-destruction” by party leaders, warning that unless the leadership retraces its steps, members with a clear vision for the country may be forced to seek alignment elsewhere.
“If the leaders of the PDP insist on destroying the party, I can’t be part of that,” he warned.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with ongoing coalition talks allegedly led by his principal, Atiku Abubakar, stating that such moves make the party appear weak and unstable.
“The coalition movement irritates me. It destabilizes the PDP. I don’t agree with it at all,” he said.
While he didn’t declare an immediate switch, Sowunmi emphasized that if the need arises to join the APC, he would first sit with his longtime friend and APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, to understand the party’s constitution and direction.
“If I have to go to the APC, I will first of all visit my friend Felix Morka. I will have a sit down with him. I’ll ask for the constitution of the party, I will read it,” he said.
Segun Sowunmi’s statement is a rare example of political openness in Nigeria’s highly polarized landscape. Whether he eventually defects or not, his words reflect the deep ideological battles within the PDP and the broader uncertainties in the country’s opposition space.
