Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decision to visit Benue State, following the brutal massacre of over 200 people by suspected armed herdsmen over the weekend.
Obi, known for his consistent criticism of the current administration, described Tinubu’s shift in focus as “refreshing news,” marking a rare moment of alignment between the two political heavyweights.
In a statement released through his media office, Peter Obi said:
“It was refreshing news on Monday to a bewildered nation learning that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally decided to visit the scene of the brutal killings in Benue State. For this I thank him…”
He continued by urging the President to extend similar compassion and urgency to other crisis-hit regions — particularly Niger State, where devastating floods have recently claimed many lives.
“…I make a further request that similar gesture should be extended to Niger State that lost more number of human lives in a natural disaster, flood recently.”
President Tinubu, who had initially planned a visit to Kaduna State, has now redirected his travel to Benue to assess firsthand the scale of destruction, offer condolences to the bereaved, and hold high-level security talks.
Obi’s commendation comes at a time when national unity and empathy are urgently needed. Despite political differences, leaders across party lines are beginning to converge on the shared responsibility to respond decisively to humanitarian crises.
