President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the long-anticipated Ibom Deep Seaport project during a historic political moment in Akwa Ibom State. The assurance came as Governor Umo Eno was officially received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a grand rally held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu expressed his unwavering support for the Akwa Ibom governor, stating that Eno will never be forsaken or humiliated for making the bold move to join the ruling party.
In his message, the President emphasized the spirit of unity and political collaboration:
“We are here because we believe in building bridges, not walls… President Tinubu is a bridge builder. Your decision to come to APC is one you can never regret. We are your brothers and we will rise together.”
Tinubu’s assurance was echoed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who described the event as not just a political movement, but a demonstration of political maturity and visionary leadership.
One of the key takeaways from the reception was the renewed commitment to actualize the Ibom Deep Seaport — a multi-decade project aimed at unlocking massive economic potential in Akwa Ibom and the South-South region.
Governor Umo Eno, speaking at the event, made it clear that his alignment with the APC was not about politics alone, but about bringing tangible development to his people:
“We are not afraid to join APC because we believe this move will guarantee the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport. Akwa Ibom has natural depth — we don’t even need dredging. Even one terminal will justify this bold step.”
Senate President Akpabio further reassured the governor, promising that “you will get more than you asked for.”
The rally also set the tone for the 2027 general elections, with Akpabio pledging that Governor Eno and the APC in Akwa Ibom will play a strategic role in delivering votes from the South-South zone.
“You have taken the risk to join us, and every risk has a reward. You’ve joined the Senate President to deliver the Presidency come 2027, and we stand with you.”
APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje praised Eno’s decision, calling him “a wise man” for choosing national alignment over isolation. With Eno’s defection, APC now controls four of the six South-South states, with hopes that the remaining two will soon follow.
Governor Umo Eno’s switch to the APC, backed by high-level assurances and strategic promises, marks a significant shift in the region’s political landscape. With renewed hope for the Ibom Deep Seaport, this move could transform Akwa Ibom into a major economic and maritime hub.
