The National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS) has issued a heartfelt statement mourning the tragic death of Abdulkareem, a 200-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, who was reportedly stabbed to death by suspected robbers in the Ndakikpabu area of Lapai.
The association described the incident as a devastating loss not only to the deceased’s family but to the entire student body across Niger State.
“We mourn the painful loss of our colleague, Abdulkareem. His death is not just a blow to his family, but to the entire student community in Niger State,” NANISS said.
In the wake of this gruesome killing, NANISS joined other concerned students in a peaceful protest held on Monday in Lapai, demanding swift and decisive action from both the university management and the state government.
The group urged authorities to take immediate steps to:
- Enhance student security both on and off campus
- Prosecute the perpetrators swiftly
- Strengthen surveillance and law enforcement presence in student residential areas
“We urge the university management and relevant security agencies to take proactive steps to secure student lives and property. No student should have to live in fear,” the association stressed.
According to DAILY POST, Abdulkareem was attacked in his off-campus residence in the Ndakikpabu area by suspected phone snatchers. He was stabbed in the neck during the robbery and was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
In response to the growing tension and public outrage, the Niger State Police Command has:
- Deployed tactical teams to the area to maintain peace and prevent escalation
- Launched an investigation aimed at tracking down the suspects and restoring order in the community
This unfortunate incident once again raises serious questions about student safety in Nigerian tertiary institutions, especially those living off-campus without proper security infrastructure.
While the government has made promises to tackle insecurity, the reality on the ground demands urgent and tangible reforms to protect the lives of students — the future of the nation.
