In the wake of the tragic killing of a 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, the Niger State Government has pledged urgent action to tackle rising insecurity affecting student communities.
The victim, reportedly attacked by suspected phone snatchers at his off-campus residence, has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern over the safety of thousands of students living outside the university’s main campus.
An emergency meeting convened in Lapai brought together high-profile stakeholders, including:

The Commissioner expressed the government’s deep condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and safety across student lodges and surrounding communities.
In a robust security plan, the Niger State Government announced several key interventions:
- Deployment of over 200 trained local vigilantes to student-populated areas
- Creation of official checkpoints to monitor movement and deter criminals
- Provision of surveillance equipment and motorcycles to patrol units
- Mandatory ID card checks for all students, to assist identification and protect against impersonators
Jantabo emphasized the need for nonviolent cooperation, warning that anyone found with weapons during protests would face prosecution under the amended penal code.
One of the standout revelations from the meeting was the concern over the unregulated student housing market, with some lodges charging up to ₦400,000 annually, despite lacking basic safety and infrastructure.
The government announced collaboration with the Niger State Urban Development Board (NUDB) to:
- Inspect all off-campus hostels
- Shut down unapproved or insecure lodges
- Ensure landlords upgrade infrastructure for better safety
IBBU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, called for calm among students, encouraging them to:
- Stay vigilant
- Avoid risky areas at night
- Report suspicious behavior to the school or local authorities
He reaffirmed the university’s support in ensuring student welfare while working closely with state security agencies.
