Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is ready to shelve his long-standing presidential ambition if a younger and widely acceptable candidate emerges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made this revelation during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, who has contested for the nation’s top office multiple times, explained that his decision is driven by a desire to see Nigeria progress under capable leadership, regardless of his personal ambitions.
“If a younger person with national acceptance and credibility emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any coalition of parties, I will willingly step down. My concern is Nigeria’s future, not my ambition,” Atiku stated.
His remarks come at a time when debates about generational leadership, youth inclusion in politics, and Nigeria’s search for effective governance dominate national discourse.
