A fresh wave of controversy has hit Nigeria’s transport sector as a Dangote-backed new trucking company has reportedly written to the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), declaring that its drivers have rejected membership under the union.
The letter, which surfaced on Nairaland’s politics forum, has generated heated debate, with stakeholders raising concerns about the future of unionism in Nigeria’s transport and petroleum sectors.
According to the company, drivers attached to its operations prefer to remain independent and are not willing to be bound by NUPENG’s rules or obligations. The development is seen as a direct challenge to NUPENG’s influence, particularly in the highly sensitive trucking and fuel distribution industry.
Analysts believe this could spark tensions between the union and corporate organizations, especially as NUPENG has historically played a decisive role in labor relations, strikes, and negotiations within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
