Tension heightened in Abuja on Wednesday as security operatives reportedly arrested several protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the protesters, who gathered peacefully in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, were carrying placards calling for justice and the unconditional release of Kanu, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021.
The demonstration was swiftly dispersed by police and other security agencies, leading to multiple arrests. Photos circulating online show some of the protesters being bundled into police vehicles.
The development has sparked anger across social media, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s approach to civil demonstrations. Critics argue that while peaceful protesters are being detained, the same energy is not applied to tackling banditry and terrorism across the country.
