In a surprising courtroom twist, detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has dismissed his legal team and announced plans to personally defend himself in his ongoing trial for alleged treasonable offences.
The development comes just hours after low-turnout protests were held in Abuja by supporters demanding his release — a move that appears to have deepened internal divisions within the pro-Biafra movement.
Kanu reportedly informed the court on Tuesday that he would no longer rely on his lawyers or agitators, opting instead to take full control of his defence. In an unexpected move, he also listed prominent Nigerian figures — including Nyesom Wike, David Umahi, T.Y. Danjuma, Tukur Buratai, and Hope Uzodinma — among those he intends to call as witnesses.
This decision follows a preliminary objection Kanu filed recently, challenging the court’s jurisdiction to continue the case. Meanwhile, a medical panel appointed by the court has declared him fit to stand trial, further clearing the way for proceedings to continue.
