The Federal Government has dropped a clear message to electricity distribution companies (DisCos): stop collecting money for meter installation or face serious sanctions.
According to government officials, Nigerians should no longer be charged a kobo to get their prepaid meters installed, as the cost is already covered under existing power sector regulations. Any DisCo caught extorting customers under the guise of “installation fees” risks fines, penalties, or tougher regulatory action.
The FG says the move is part of its ongoing push to end estimated billing wahala, protect electricity consumers, and restore trust in the power sector. Consumers have also been urged to report any DisCo still demanding payment for meter installation.
For many Nigerians, this announcement is a big win in the fight against unfair electricity billing. Now, the ball is in the DisCos’ court.
