The Abia State Government has kicked off the demolition and full reconstruction of its College of Health Sciences, signaling a major push to upgrade healthcare training and academic infrastructure in the state.
According to reports by Punch, the project was approved by the state government as part of ongoing reforms aimed at fixing decaying public institutions and positioning Abia as a hub for quality health education and manpower development.
Officials explained that many of the existing buildings had become structurally weak, outdated, and unfit for modern teaching and learning. Rather than patching old facilities, the government opted for a complete overhaul, clearing the way for new, standard classrooms, laboratories, hostels, and administrative blocks.
The demolition exercise, which has already commenced, marks the first phase of a broader reconstruction plan expected to meet national and international accreditation standards.
The state government assured students, staff, and residents that the rebuilt College of Health Sciences will feature:
- Modern lecture theatres and digital learning facilities
- Well-equipped laboratories and practical rooms
- Improved hostels and staff offices
- Better water, power, and security systems
Authorities added that the project aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s vision of investing in human capital development, especially in the health sector where trained professionals are urgently needed.
While the demolition initially sparked concerns about disruption, many students and residents have welcomed the move, describing it as long overdue. They expressed hope that the reconstruction will be completed on schedule and not abandoned midway, as seen with past projects.
