As preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially released a comprehensive timetable for its ward, local government, state congresses and national convention.
The ruling party made this known through a statement issued by its National Organising Secretary, signalling the formal kick-off of internal political activities that will shape the party’s leadership structure and strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
According to the timetable, the congresses will begin at the grassroots level, starting with ward congresses across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This will be followed by local government and state congresses, where party executives at various levels will emerge.
Party insiders say the step-by-step process is designed to ensure proper coordination, reduce internal disputes and give members at the grassroots a sense of ownership in the party’s decision-making process.
The APC also confirmed that its highly anticipated national convention will hold after the completion of state congresses. At the convention, a new National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to be elected, setting the tone for the party’s leadership going into the 2027 elections.
Political observers believe the early release of the timetable is a strategic move by the APC to stabilise its internal structure, manage factional tensions in some states and position the party strongly ahead of expected alignments, defections and opposition manoeuvres.
Sources within the party revealed that strict guidelines will accompany the congresses, with emphasis on transparency, inclusiveness and adherence to the party’s constitution. Aspirants are also expected to comply with laid-down rules to avoid post-congress litigations that have plagued past exercises.
With this development, the race for control of party structures at all levels has officially begun, as power blocs, governors, lawmakers and grassroots politicians begin underground consultations and strategic positioning.
As 2027 draws closer, all eyes remain on how the APC will manage its internal politics, especially in key battleground states that could determine the outcome of the next general elections.
