The Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has announced the establishment of Local Government Mediation Panels across the state as part of efforts to promote peace, dialogue, and alternative dispute resolution at the grassroots level.
In a public notice issued by the Ministry, the mediation panels are domiciled at the Local Government Council Headquarters in the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State. The initiative is designed to provide residents with a peaceful, confidential, voluntary, and cost-free mechanism for resolving disputes without resorting to prolonged and expensive litigation.
According to the Ministry, the mediation centres are mandated to handle matters such as:
- Family and domestic disputes
- Land and boundary disagreements
- Community conflicts
- Landlord and tenant matters
- Minor commercial and interpersonal disputes
The mediation process is voluntary, confidential, and intended to ensure timely resolution of conflicts, thereby reducing pressure on the formal justice system and fostering harmony within communities.
