Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a stern warning to private schools in the state, threatening closure for those that fail to resume academic activities on Mondays. The directive comes amid growing concerns over inconsistent school schedules and prolonged weekend closures that disrupt learning.
Speaking at a recent education stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, Governor Soludo emphasized that every school, public or private, has a duty to maintain a consistent academic calendar. He described the failure to open on Mondays as a disservice to students and parents, stressing that it undermines the state’s educational standards.
The governor warned that any private school found deliberately skipping Monday sessions without valid reasons would face temporary closure and other sanctions deemed necessary by the state government. “Education is not negotiable. Schools must uphold discipline, punctuality, and commitment to learning,” he declared.
Education authorities in Anambra have been directed to monitor school operations closely and report non-compliance immediately. Soludo further urged school proprietors to engage with teachers and parents to ensure smooth running of academic programs, particularly at the start of each week.
Parents and students have welcomed the directive, noting that regular school operations are crucial for academic performance and planning. While some private schools expressed concerns about logistics and weekend staffing, the governor assured that the government would support schools in meeting the set standards, provided compliance is maintained.
