Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has made it clear that his political ambition ahead of the 2027 general election is firmly set on the presidency, not a supporting role.
Obi, while addressing concerns and speculations around possible political alignments, categorically stated that he will not accept a vice-presidential ticket, stressing that his focus remains on contesting as a presidential candidate.
According to him, the decision is driven by his conviction that Nigeria urgently needs competent, visionary, and accountable leadership capable of steering the country out of its current economic and social challenges. Obi maintained that he believes he has both the experience and the ideas required to lead the nation at this critical time.
The former governor, who rose to national prominence during the 2023 elections, emphasized that his movement is issue-based rather than personality-driven. He noted that while he remains open to collaborations and partnerships that align with his vision for Nigeria, such alliances must be built on shared principles, integrity, and a genuine commitment to national development.
Reacting to growing calls from some political quarters urging him to consider a vice-presidential slot for the sake of opposition unity, Obi firmly dismissed the idea, saying leadership is about clarity of purpose, not political convenience. He argued that Nigerians deserve leaders who are decisive and intentional about their aspirations.
Obi also used the opportunity to reiterate his long-standing message of moving Nigeria from consumption to production, tackling corruption head-on, and investing massively in education, healthcare, and human capital development. According to him, these priorities form the backbone of his presidential ambition and cannot be effectively pursued from a secondary position.
