At least nine worshippers were abducted in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, during a night vigil at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ojije, Utonkon District of Ado Local Government Area, Benue State, security sources have confirmed.
The victims, who were attending a vigil inside the church premises, were reportedly taken by suspected gunmen — widely described in initial accounts as bandits — at around 2:00 a.m. while worshippers were deep in prayer.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command said tactical units and local vigilante groups have been deployed to track down the abductors and secure the release of the captives. A police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, told reporters that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full‑scale investigation and a manhunt for those responsible. “We are determined to rescue the victims and ensure the security of all citizens in the state,” she said.
Local community leaders described a climate of fear and mourning following news of the abduction, lamenting that the worshippers — mostly women and youths — were taken at a time when the congregation believed they were protected within the sacred space.
One community official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the group was participating in a program that had been ongoing in the church for several days. He urged that security operatives be involved in future night vigils to prevent similar attacks.
