Members of the Arewa community residing in Auchi, Edo State, on Monday observed a peaceful sit-at-home protest to express deep concern over the growing cases of insecurity affecting their members and businesses in the area.
The protest, which was largely coordinated by community leaders, saw many northern-owned shops and businesses temporarily closed as residents stayed indoors in solidarity. The action was aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities and security agencies to the safety challenges allegedly faced by members of the community.
Some community representatives who spoke during the protest explained that the decision to stage the sit-at-home demonstration followed repeated complaints about attacks, harassment, and threats to traders and residents believed to be from northern Nigeria.
According to them, the protest was not intended to cause tension but to peacefully demand urgent intervention from relevant authorities to protect lives and property.
“We want the government and security agencies to hear our concerns. Our people are afraid, and we need assurance that everyone living and doing business here is safe,” one of the community leaders said.
Residents in the area reported reduced commercial activities during the protest as several markets and shops remained shut for hours.
Community leaders further called on the Edo State Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and provide adequate protection to residents regardless of their ethnic background.
They also appealed for calm among residents, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence among different ethnic groups in the region.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement regarding the protest. However, residents expressed hope that their concerns would prompt immediate dialogue and action from the authorities.
