A tragic incident has thrown the Umuocheala community in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State into mourning following the alleged death of a man after a police operation linked to a land dispute.
According to the family, police officers from the Owerrinta Police Station stormed the family’s residence at night to effect arrests over the dispute. The officers allegedly forced their way into the compound and assaulted members of the household during the operation.
The man’s wife and two underaged children were arrested and taken into custody, while the family claimed the man was also physically assaulted during the incident.
Relatives alleged that during the altercation, the man fell and struck his head against a concrete block, leaving him seriously injured. They claimed that despite his condition, the officers initially believed he was pretending and allegedly continued to assault him before dragging him into their patrol vehicle.
According to the family’s account, the officers later realized the man was in severe distress as he struggled to breathe. They allegedly returned to the family’s compound, removed him from the vehicle, left him on the ground, and drove away with his wife and children to the Owerrinta Police Station, where they were detained.
The wife and her two children reportedly remained in police custody until around 1:00 a.m., when they were granted bail following interventions by concerned individuals. After trekking several miles back home, they were devastated to find the injured man still lying in the compound where he had allegedly been abandoned.
The family immediately rushed him to a hospital, but he was reportedly confirmed dead on arrival.
The deceased is said to have left behind seven children, who are now without their father.
According to the family, they returned to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) the following morning to report the man’s death. They alleged that instead of opening an investigation, they were warned against making any public complaint and told to bury their dead quietly. These claims have not been independently verified.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and renewed concerns about alleged police brutality, the treatment of suspects during arrest operations, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
As of the time of filing this report, the Abia State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The family and members of the community are calling for a thorough, independent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable in accordance with the law.
