The New York Post Editorial Board has called on former U.S. President Donald Trump to publicly denounce the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria, describing it as one of the most underreported humanitarian crises in the world.
According to the report, over 7,000 Christians have been massacred in the first seven months of this year alone. The editorial highlights that while Nigerian government forces continue to combat Boko Haram and other extremist groups in the north, they have allegedly failed to curb attacks by militant Fulani herdsmen targeting Christian communities across the Middle Belt region.
Since 2009, the violence has reportedly resulted in the destruction of over 18,000 churches, the murder of more than 50,000 Christians, and the displacement of about 5 million people — a crisis that advocacy groups say has not received enough global attention.
The editorial further emphasized that U.S. leaders, especially those with strong ties to faith-based communities like Trump, should use their platforms to pressure Nigerian authorities into taking decisive action to protect vulnerable Christian populations and end what it described as “a silent genocide.”
The appeal from prominent American Christian leaders underscores the growing international concern about religious persecution and insecurity in Nigeria — issues that continue to test the country’s unity and human rights record.
