The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised the reported withdrawal of candidates from the forthcoming elections in the Federal Capital Territory, describing the development as a threat to democratic principles.
In a statement released on Monday, the opposition party expressed concern that the withdrawal of candidates undermines voters’ rights to make free and informed choices at the polls. The PDP noted that competitive elections are the foundation of democracy and warned that any action capable of limiting options for voters could weaken public confidence in the electoral process.
The party further alleged that undue pressure, political intimidation, or backdoor arrangements may be responsible for the withdrawals, calling on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the development. According to the PDP, the integrity of the FCT elections must be protected to ensure fairness, transparency, and credibility.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, the PDP urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties and candidates participating in the elections.
The party also appealed to voters in the FCT to remain vigilant and actively participate in the electoral process, stressing that their voices remain crucial in shaping governance at all levels.
