In a remarkable display of leadership and appreciation for integrity, the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has honoured a courageous Nigerian soldier whose steadfastness during a critical security operation helped restore peace to communities that were once terrorised by criminal activities.
The soldier, Staff Sergeant Amoke Gunshot Simeon of the Nigerian Army, played a significant role in the operation that dismantled the network of the notorious kidnapping kingpin, Osisikankwu. At the height of his criminal activities, the feared gang leader and his group had turned several communities across Abia State into danger zones, forcing residents to flee their homes while businesses and economic activities suffered greatly.
Between 2010 and 2014, the Nigerian military launched a series of operations aimed at restoring law and order in the affected areas. Staff Sergeant Simeon was among the officers deployed for the mission, risking his life alongside other security personnel to confront the criminal network that had held many communities hostage.
During the operation, Simeon later revealed a shocking moment that tested his loyalty and integrity. According to him, the notorious criminal attempted to derail the mission by offering him a bribe of ₦50 million in exchange for compromising the operation. Relief finally arrived when he was received by Governor Alex Otti at the Government House in Umuahia on March 19. During the emotional meeting, the governor acknowledged Simeon’s bravery and integrity, describing his actions as a shining example of patriotism and dedication to duty.
In recognition of his sacrifice, Governor Otti announced that the Abia State Government would fully sponsor the soldier’s medical treatment abroad. The governor assured him that the state would bear the entire cost of the treatment to ensure he receives the best medical care possible and regains his health.
The announcement was met with deep emotion from the soldier, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the governor for the compassionate gesture. Simeon reflected on the moment he rejected the ₦50 million bribe years ago, noting that if he had chosen to betray his duty, he would not be experiencing the honour and recognition he now receives.
He described the governor’s support as fatherly and uplifting, adding that the gesture had renewed his hope and strengthened his belief that integrity and honesty will always be rewarded.
