Rivers APC Governorship Race Records Another Twist as Alabo George-Kelly Withdraws From Primaries

The political atmosphere in Rivers State has taken another dramatic turn following the decision of Alabo George-Kelly to officially withdraw from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries. His withdrawal comes shortly after Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, also announced his exit from the contest.

George-Kelly, regarded as one of the frontline contenders in the APC governorship race, made his decision public in a statement released on Wednesday. In the statement, he reiterated his readiness to support and work with whoever emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.

According to political sources, his decision followed a strategic stakeholders’ meeting convened by the APC national leadership. The discussions reportedly focused on strengthening internal unity, defining the party’s political direction, and shaping electoral strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former aspirant, who described himself as a committed member of the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, explained that his withdrawal was reached after broad consultations with political associates and key stakeholders.

Speaking on the development, George-Kelly stressed the importance of party unity and adherence to democratic principles.

“Following the stakeholders’ engagement and extensive consultations with members of my political structure and other key stakeholders, I have resolved, in the interest of unity and party supremacy, to withdraw from the forthcoming governorship primaries,” he stated.

He further assured party faithful and supporters of his unwavering commitment to the APC, pledging total support to the candidate that eventually emerges from the process.

Political analysts have described the latest development as part of ongoing strategic consultations and realignments within the Rivers APC as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum.

Reaffirming his political principles, George-Kelly maintained that his journey has always been guided by discipline, loyalty, leadership, and respect for constituted authority. He also emphasized that the 2027 elections represent an important opportunity to consolidate support for President Tinubu, strengthen the APC’s political structure, and advance the development of Rivers State.

He concluded by calling on members of the coalition and his supporters to remain united, focused, and committed to the overall progress of the party and Rivers State.
