The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion for a large-scale mass wedding programme aimed at supporting 3,000 couples across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, during a media briefing on preparations for the event.
According to Daurawa, the approved funds will cover several aspects of the programme, including dowries, furniture, food items, clothing materials, and a N100,000 empowerment grant for each bride to help them begin their marital journey.
“The Kano State Government will spend N1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme, which will soon be conducted in the state,” Daurawa stated.
Medical Screening Underway
As part of the requirements for participation, the Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health, has commenced comprehensive medical screening for intending couples.
The screening includes tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, pregnancy, and other sexually transmitted infections. The exercise is aimed at ensuring the health and well-being of participants before marriage.
According to Daurawa, more than 5,000 individuals applied for the programme. However, only 3,000 beneficiaries will be selected after the completion of the screening and verification process.
Supporting Less-Privileged Residents
The Hisbah Commander-General commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for championing the initiative, describing it as a significant social intervention programme designed to support less-privileged residents and promote family stability.
He noted that the programme would help reduce the financial burden associated with marriage while encouraging responsible family formation within the state.
Beneficiaries Drawn from 24 LGAs
The medical screening exercise, which commenced on Monday, June 8, 2026, is currently being conducted for prospective couples drawn from 24 of Kano State’s 44 local government areas.
The governor is expected to announce the official date of the mass wedding ceremony in the coming weeks.
Promoting Stable Family Structures
The Kano State mass wedding initiative remains one of the state’s key social welfare programmes. Over the years, it has been designed to assist individuals who may struggle with the financial demands of marriage, while also promoting stable family structures and community development.
With the government committing N1.5 billion to the programme, thousands of couples are expected to benefit from the intervention as preparations continue for what is set to be one of the largest mass weddings in the state’s history.
