Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has come down hard on traders at the popular Onitsha Main Market following poor compliance with the state’s directive against the illegal sit-at-home order.
In a move that sent shockwaves across the commercial city, the state government ordered the immediate closure of the market, warning that the shutdown could stretch up to one month if traders continue to defy government authority.
According to reports monitored by Punch, Governor Soludo expressed deep disappointment that despite repeated assurances from traders’ leaders and several stakeholder meetings, many shops still remained locked during business days. He described the situation as economic sabotage and a major threat to Anambra’s survival as a trading hub.
“You can’t claim to be suffering and still shut your shops voluntarily,” the governor reportedly warned.
Security operatives were deployed to enforce the closure as government officials sealed off parts of the market. Soludo made it clear that no amount of pressure or sentiment would make his administration tolerate actions that cripple the state’s economy and instill fear among residents.
He further emphasized that Anambra cannot move forward if traders continue to obey unauthorized sit-at-home orders, stressing that his government has provided security and will not hesitate to wield the big stick.
As of press time, traders, transporters, and residents are counting losses, while market leaders are said to be holding emergency meetings to avert a prolonged shutdown.
