Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has disclosed that he was among the high-profile individuals marked for elimination during a recently uncovered coup attempt against the Nigerian state.
General Musa made this revelation while speaking on national security and the evolving threats to democratic governance in the country. According to him, intelligence reports indicated that the plotters had drawn up a list of strategic targets, with his name clearly included. He stated that the intention was not only to destabilise the nation but also to assassinate key military and political figures to create fear and chaos.
The Defence Chief explained that the coup plot was foiled through timely intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and decisive action by the armed forces and other security agencies. He noted that the success of the operation reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the Constitution and its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democratic order.
General Musa further warned that threats to national security remain real, stressing the need for constant vigilance, public cooperation, and support for security institutions. He described the failed coup as a reminder that democracy must be actively defended, not taken for granted.
Reassuring Nigerians, the CDS stated that the Armed Forces are fully in control of the situation and will continue to act professionally to safeguard lives, national unity, and the sovereignty of the country.
