Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to public criticism surrounding his recent visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the backlash as unnecessary and rooted in political misinterpretation.
Wike spoke on Wednesday while inspecting ongoing road projects in Karu, Apo-Karshi, and Kubwa in the FCT.
He said the visit to APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, was a normal interaction between former colleagues and should not be turned into a political issue.
According to him, both men worked together in government before Yilwatda assumed his current party leadership role, stressing that there is nothing unusual about maintaining cordial relationships across party lines.
“We were all colleagues before he became APC chairman. So must I hide whenever I see him? Must he also run away when he sees me?” Wike queried.
The minister further explained that the visit was also a reciprocal gesture, noting that the APC chairman had previously made attempts to visit him at his office without success.
Reacting to questions about why no official briefing was issued after the meeting, Wike maintained that he has no obligation to publicly disclose details of his private interactions.
He dismissed suggestions that politicians from different parties must avoid one another, insisting that freedom of association is a fundamental right that should not be politicized.
Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while serving in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, said his focus remains on delivering infrastructure and governance results for residents of the FCT.
“My priority is the work I’m doing for the people. What matters is impact, not political gossip,” he added.
He reiterated that his performance in office should be the basis of public judgment, not speculation about his social or political relationships.
