Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has disclosed that barely three months after the current administration took office, some individuals allegedly attempted to create tension between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by accusing him of plotting to eliminate the President and assume power.
Shettima made the revelation on Tuesday during the public presentation of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance.
According to the Vice President, the individuals involved, who were reportedly from Borno State, approached President Tinubu with the allegations.
Speaking on the incident, Shettima stated:
“Three months after we were sworn in, some people went to Tinubu and claimed I was planning to kill him and take over power.”
He further explained that President Tinubu later discussed the issue with him but dismissed the allegations as unfounded.
According to Shettima, the President reportedly said:
“Sit down! Your people came to me and said I should stop wearing the clothes you gave me.”
The Vice President explained that the accusers also alleged that clothes he gifted Tinubu had ritual intentions meant to harm him. However, President Tinubu continued wearing them, which Shettima said demonstrated that the President does not operate based on superstition.
Shettima used the occasion to urge Nigerians to embrace peace, unity, and national togetherness, stressing the need to avoid actions capable of creating unnecessary divisions among leaders and citizens.
The revelation has sparked discussions within political circles, especially regarding internal political dynamics and efforts to influence relationships among key figures in government.
