The United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Collins, has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to deepen military cooperation and strengthen strategic security ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
The visit, which was announced by the British Defence Staff West Africa through its official X account on Tuesday, underscores the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in tackling terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges affecting the country and the wider West African region.
According to the British Defence Staff West Africa, the visit provided an opportunity for the senior military officer to witness ongoing UK-Nigeria defence cooperation firsthand and engage with Nigerian military authorities on areas of mutual security interest.
“Welcome to Nigeria, Lt Gen Sir Charlie Collins KBE DSO, UK Deputy CDS (MSO),” the statement read.
The British military further noted that Collins was in Maiduguri alongside officials of the Nigerian Army Headquarters to assess existing collaborations and reinforce support for Nigeria-led initiatives aimed at enhancing security and promoting regional stability.
Images released from the visit showed the UK defence chief receiving a military guard of honour and participating in official engagements with senior Nigerian Army officers, including ceremonial handshakes and the exchange of commemorative plaques.
The visit comes at a time when Nigeria continues to intensify efforts to address security threats in the North-East and other parts of the country through strategic partnerships with international allies.
Over the years, defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom has expanded significantly through military training programmes, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism support, and capacity-building initiatives designed to improve the operational effectiveness of Nigerian security forces.
Security analysts believe the visit by Lieutenant General Collins will further strengthen the long-standing defence relationship between both nations and provide an avenue for reviewing existing collaborations while exploring new areas of cooperation.
As Nigeria continues its fight against terrorism and other emerging security threats, partnerships such as the one with the United Kingdom remain crucial in enhancing military capabilities and fostering peace, security, and stability across the region.
