President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the completed main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), stretching from Ring Road I Junction (Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway) to Ring Road II Junction (Kabusa Junction), providing improved access to the rapidly growing districts of Lokogoma and Galadimawa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The commissioning ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with the President represented by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Describing the project as a tangible demonstration of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, President Tinubu declared that the era of abandoned government projects in Nigeria is over.
“When we took the oath of office to lead this great nation, we promised a renewed hope that is tangible—hope that you can see, hope that you can feel, and hope that you can drive on. We don’t start projects to abandon them. The era of uncompleted projects in Nigeria is gone. We finish what we start,” he stated.
The President recalled commissioning earlier phases of the inherited OSEX project, also known as Mahamadou Issoufou Way, over the past two years. He noted that the completion of the road would significantly improve traffic flow within the FCT, reduce commuting time, and lower fuel consumption for residents.
President Tinubu praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his commitment to transforming Abuja through impactful infrastructure development.
According to the President, Wike’s dedication has demonstrated that public service should be measured by performance and results rather than excuses.
“You have kept the contractors on their toes, and you have kept our vision alive. This is the spirit of the Renewed Hope Agenda—delivering quality results for the Nigerian people, on time,” he said.
The President further assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to sustained infrastructure development across the country.
“We will continue to build, we will continue to reform, and we will continue to invest in the future of our people,” he added.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also commended the FCT Minister’s efforts to relocate traders operating at the Apo Mechanic Village to a permanent site in the Wasa District.
He noted that visible infrastructural achievements in Abuja have continued to earn public support for the administration, citing the ruling party’s strong performance in recent Area Council elections.
Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike revealed that President Tinubu had directed the FCT Administration upon assumption of office in 2023 to complete all inherited projects, considering the substantial public funds already invested in them.
Wike disclosed that the contract for the OSEX main carriageways from Ring Road I to Ring Road II was awarded in October 2025 and that the administration ensured adequate funding throughout the execution period.
The Minister said he frequently inspected the project site to monitor progress and ensure timely delivery.
Wike admitted that he initially doubted whether the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), could complete the project and its associated bridges in time for the President’s third anniversary celebrations.
However, he praised the company for fulfilling its commitment and delivering the project as promised.
“I want to sincerely thank CGC. This means that nothing is impossible if we are determined and committed to achieving results. With proper understanding between government and contractors, and mutual fulfillment of obligations, we can achieve great things. I am happy with them, and I want to thank them on behalf of the FCTA,” Wike stated.
The Minister also dismissed claims that little or no development is taking place in Nigeria, pointing to the FCT Administration’s ongoing 31-day commissioning programme showcasing completed projects across Abuja and its satellite towns.
“It baffles most of us when people say nothing is happening in this country. Can those in the FCT say nothing is happening in Abuja?” he asked.
Wike further announced that infrastructure has been fully provided at the new Wasa District site designated for the relocation of the Apo Mechanic Village, ending years of unsuccessful attempts by previous administrations to move the traders and decongest the area.
In her vote of thanks, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructure development.
She described the commissioning of the OSEX main carriageways as another landmark achievement under the Renewed Hope Agenda and a major milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Federal Capital Territory.
Providing an overview of the project, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, explained that the commissioned section consists of the two main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway from Ring Road I to Ring Road II.
He noted that the expressway is being developed in phases and, upon completion, will extend through Apo and Wasa districts to Kuje before terminating at the intersection with the A2 Federal Highway in Gwagwalada along the Abuja–Lokoja corridor.
The completion of the OSEX corridor marks another significant milestone in the Federal Government’s drive to modernize transportation infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support economic growth within the nation’s capital.
