The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially unveiled former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja through a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following what the party described as extensive consultations with stakeholders, coalition partners, and representatives from across the country.
A “Unity and Rescue” Ticket
According to the ADC, the Atiku-Amaechi partnership represents a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at offering Nigerians an alternative leadership platform capable of addressing the nation’s economic, security, and governance challenges.
The party stated that the alliance brings together two experienced political figures with the capacity to reposition Nigeria and drive national development.
“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance. It is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” the statement read.
Why Amaechi Was Chosen
The ADC explained that Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his strong showing during the party’s presidential primary election, where he emerged as the runner-up with 504,117 votes, as well as his extensive experience in public service.
Amaechi has held several strategic positions in government, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, and Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023.
During his tenure as Minister of Transportation, he oversaw several major railway and transportation infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
The party noted that his experience in both legislative and executive leadership makes him one of Nigeria’s most accomplished political figures.
Building a Broad National Coalition
ADC leaders believe Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria will strengthen the party’s national appeal and help build a formidable coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Abdullahi, the ticket reflects regional balance, political inclusiveness, and governance experience.
“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions. Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organisation, and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible and compelling alternative.”
Key Campaign Priorities
The ADC revealed that its campaign will focus on critical national issues, including:
- Economic recovery and growth
- Job creation
- National security
- Infrastructure development
- National unity and cohesion
The party also called on members, coalition partners, youth groups, women leaders, civil society organisations, and supporters across the country to rally behind the ticket as preparations for the 2027 election intensify.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Atiku Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, remains one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures and a recurring presidential contender.
Political analysts believe the emergence of the Atiku-Amaechi ticket signals the ADC’s determination to build a broad-based coalition capable of mounting a serious challenge in what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election.
As political activities gather momentum, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the ADC’s new ticket reshapes the country’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
