Family of Late General Rabe Abubakar Demands Explanation Over Recovery of His Body as Wife Remains in Captivity

The family of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has called on the Katsina State Government to explain how the former military officer’s body was recovered from captivity, insisting that the authorities owe Nigerians and the family a clear account of the circumstances surrounding the development.

The demand was made by the deceased’s son, Ishaka Rabe Abubakar, during an interview with DW Hausa. He also dismissed reports suggesting that his mother, Amina Abubakar, had regained her freedom, maintaining that she remains in the custody of armed bandits.

Abduction Along Katsina Road

Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Katsina State. The couple was reportedly attacked by armed bandits near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area. Their driver sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.

Following news of the retired general’s death, conflicting reports emerged regarding both the cause of his death and how his remains were eventually recovered.

Family Seeks Answers

Speaking on the controversy, Ishaka said the family had no information regarding the process through which his father’s body was retrieved and urged the government to provide clarity.

“Many people asked how the corpse was recovered after hearing about the funeral arrangements. I have no answer to that question. The government should explain how the body was brought back because even I would like to know.”

Remembering a Humble Soldier

Describing his father, Ishaka portrayed the late general as a peaceful, humble, and deeply religious man who maintained good relationships with people throughout his life.

“My father was a good man, a believer, and a devoted Muslim. He never harmed anyone and lived peacefully with people. Anyone who met him would testify to his humility and kindness.”

Dispute Over Cause of Death

The family has also questioned the official explanation surrounding General Abubakar’s death.

While the Katsina State Government stated that he died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity, Ishaka said observations made by the family raised concerns that a snakebite could have been responsible.

“In our opinion, it was not diabetes that caused his death. The condition of his leg suggested that it could have been a snakebite. However, Allah knows best what truly happened.”

Wife Still Held by Bandits

Ishaka firmly denied reports circulating on social media claiming that his mother had been released.

“Anyone claiming she has regained freedom is not telling the truth. As I speak, my mother is still in the custody of the bandits.”

His statement has heightened concerns about the fate of Amina Abubakar, as family members continue to await her safe return.

Appeal to Government

Commenting on the government’s role, Ishaka clarified that the family was not accusing Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of directly causing the tragedy. However, he stressed that leadership carries responsibility for the security and welfare of citizens.

“We are not saying the governor personally caused what happened. However, as the leader of the state, he bears responsibility for the protection of the people. Our message to him is simple: may Allah continue to guide him, and we are still waiting for our mother’s return.”

Government’s Position

Earlier, the Katsina State Government confirmed the death of the retired military officer through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu.

According to the government, General Abubakar died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his release.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a painful loss to Katsina State and Nigeria, extending condolences to the bereaved family while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling banditry and insecurity.

The governor also assured residents that security agencies would intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and secure the release of all victims still being held captive.

As questions continue to surround the circumstances of General Abubakar’s death and the recovery of his remains, the family says its primary concern remains the safe return of Amina Abubakar, who is still believed to be in captivity.
