Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, has officially commenced his diplomatic engagements in Spain with a high-level courtesy visit to the Apostolic Nuncio to the Kingdom of Spain and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Archbishop Pierro Pioppo.
The meeting, held at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madrid, marked Ambassador Ikpeazu’s first official courtesy visit since assuming diplomatic responsibilities in Spain. The engagement reflects Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, promoting international cooperation, and deepening constructive engagement with the global diplomatic community.
Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Ikpeazu described his decision to make the Apostolic Nuncio the first recipient of his official courtesy visit as both strategic and symbolic. He explained that Archbishop Pioppo’s position as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps places him at the heart of Spain’s diplomatic community, making the visit an important step in reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to dialogue, mutual respect, and productive international partnerships.
The former Abia State Governor also revealed that he sought the Archbishop’s prayers and blessings as he begins the responsibility of representing Nigeria abroad. He described the assignment as both a privilege and a solemn duty to project a positive image of Nigeria before the international community.
Ambassador Ikpeazu stated that his mission extends beyond traditional diplomacy. According to him, he intends to showcase Nigeria’s vast economic opportunities, youthful population, entrepreneurial capacity, and investment potential while encouraging stronger commercial, cultural, and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Spain.
He maintained that Nigeria remains a nation of immense promise, blessed with abundant human and natural resources capable of attracting increased international investment and strategic partnerships.
Discussions during the meeting reportedly focused on promoting global peace, strengthening unity among nations, protecting human dignity, and advancing international cooperation in addressing emerging global challenges.
Ambassador Ikpeazu emphasized that enduring diplomatic relationships must be built on the principles of mutual respect, equality, justice, and shared responsibility, irrespective of race, nationality, ethnicity, or religion.
He further stressed that dialogue and collaboration remain essential tools for building a more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous world, noting that diplomacy continues to serve as one of the most effective instruments for advancing sustainable development and fostering stronger relations among nations.
