A major development has emerged in Nigeria’s political space as the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has affirmed the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, removing a key legal challenge that had surrounded discussions about his potential return to the race.
The decision came after the court dismissed a suit seeking to stop Jonathan from participating in the next presidential election on constitutional grounds. Justice Peter Lifu held that the issue of Jonathan’s eligibility had already been addressed in earlier judicial decisions and therefore did not present a fresh legal question for determination.
According to the ruling, previous judgments delivered by the Federal High Court in Yenagoa and later affirmed by the Court of Appeal had already established that there was no constitutional barrier preventing Jonathan from seeking office again if he chooses to do so.
The suit had questioned whether Jonathan could lawfully seek another term as president after having previously taken the oath of office twice — first in 2010 after succeeding the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later following his election in 2011. However, the court maintained that existing legal precedents had already settled the matter.
The judge further described the legal action as lacking merit and ruled that the plaintiff had no sufficient legal basis to institute the suit. Reports also indicated that monetary costs were awarded against the plaintiff.
The judgment is expected to generate renewed political conversations across the country, particularly as preparations and strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
While Jonathan has not officially declared an intention to contest the presidency, the ruling has removed a significant legal obstacle and is likely to fuel further speculation about his political future.
